Are Online Colleges/Universities Frowned Upon By Employers and Graduate Schools?
I am currently in the military and I’ve been taking classes at a community college on site and in class (I intend to transfer to a 4-year university). I know that most military personnel choose the online option for the convenience, but I’ve avoided that route so far mainly because of rumors I have heard about online schools regarding their quality to employers and some graduate schools. One of the most popular online colleges I have heard of has been the University of Maryland University College and I’ve done some research on this school and have gotten very mixed reviews. My question is: How are online colleges regarded by employers and such, more specifically UMUC? Are there any good online schools that you would recommend?
If it helps to know, I am currently a Sociology major. If I were to go to UMUC, I would major in Social Sciences (they do not have a Sociology major). When I proceed to grad school, I want to major in Counseling.
Do graduate schools (MBA programs specifically) look at your high school records, or just college and work?
Will graduate schools look at your high school academic records, or just college records and work experience? Which will they take into account most?
do you really need college algebra in order to be a psychologist? o?
Last year I attended my first year of college at Our Lady of the Lake University. I heard it had an excellent psychology program and recognized master and doctoral programs in family therapy and marriage counseling, both of the kind of specializations I want to work in. However, I had a hard time making friends and only made one friend.
This year I tranfered to Incarnate Word, the university my best friends attend. Yes, I basically did transfer over because of my best friends. I really like it at the university because I have a social life, lol and the campus is very lively and active. The only problem is this college algebra class I have to take.
I am very bad at math, and in order to get into my stats class (at Incarnate Word) for psychology I need to take college algebra. I am currently taking this class and am about to drop it because I am failing.
At my other school i just needed to take math for liberal arts( which I took and got an A) to get into the stats class.
I don’t know if i should transfer back or try taking the algebra class at community college and hope I pass. Oh, and not to mention if i don’t get this stats class out of the way I’ll get behind because it is pretty important to my degree and I’m already behind anyways. What should I do? I know this was long but i need some advice. Of course I’m not going to make my life decision based on yahoo answers but I need to see my situtaiton from every possible perspective.

Thinking about getting an online doctorate degree. ?
My ultimate career goal is to teach at a community college or a small college or university. I have a MSW but can’t find a college level teaching job with this degree. If I get a Ph.d online will any college take me serious? Would the institution hire someone with a online doctorate degree. The only reason I am considering this route is because I don’t have to jump 50 hoops to be accepted into a program. I’m looking for some serious answers only. If you have experience with this situation please comment.

What’s a good college to study psychology?
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada & I’m planning on staying here for at least another 3 to 4 years. I’m a junior in high school who plans on going to CSN to take care of the core credits or whatever my counselor called them. My original plan was to graduate early, but I’m choosing to stay behind to raise my overall GPA (due to me not taking school seriously during my freshman year :/). I don’t have enough money to go straight to a university so I’m sticking to community college until I save up. My question is, which college should I be saving up for? The farthest I’m willing/able to move is California. I was thinking about University of Phoenix, since they have a Las Vegas Campus, but I found out that only doctoral programs can be taken online. & that’s no fun! At least for me anyways. UNLV seems a little tacky, but I heard it’s good. I just want a few opinions.
I really want to be a psychologist/psychiatrist/or a counselor (for high school students). I want to help kids with mental health problems, like depression and bi-polar teenagers or just teenagers in general. I would love to help a teenager the way my counselor at my recent school did. She went out of her way for me & it really touched me
Sorry for all the detail & thanks for reading. I appreciate all POSITIVE responses ![]()
what can i expect out of grad school?
i’m currently an undergraduate at pomona college, getting my bachelor’s degrees in media studies and studio art. i plan to attend graduate school to get my PhD in media studies.
for those unfamiliar with the field, i am interested in the critical study of film, television, music, print, and online media as they relate to culture and sociological trends.
i am aiming to become a professor of media studies at a respected college or university (obviously starting out as an associate prof). with this goal in mind, what kind of grad school experience will i be looking at? how many years? will i be conducting research or writing critical pieces for publication? should i be securing teaching positions at summer programs or high schools as i earn my doctorate?
any information you could give me would be very helpful. i’d really like to get a leg up on my career responsibilities before i’m actually enrolled in a PhD program.
