Can grad school in the mental health field be this bad?

I’m in an M.A. counseling psychology program and it’s like kindergarten to me. I went to a doctoral level presentation where 3 professors gave a case study on the progress of a legally blind woman who is trying to get off welfare and get her own apartment. They all gave ‘professional’ presentations about her ‘case’ and were upbeat about her ‘progress’. I raised my hand, and said, “So you’re saying you’re trying to build her confidence to find an $9/hr. job, which is about $360/week before taxes, and you think she’ll be able to afford to live by herself and on her own? Are you serious? (This is in a big Eastern city)They all gave me sheepish looks. Then my supervisor (who was there), wrote a negative evaluation of me. Meanwhile, other students thanked me for seeing through the B.S. I thought the whole thing was unprofessional. What do you think?

The best school counseling graduate school programs in Michigan?

Can any PhD psychologist practice counseling….?

I know that all states are different, but can anyone who gets a PhD in psychology practice psychotherapy / counseling, regardless of what they studied in their doctoral program. The school I want to go to is more research based, but I would like to do counseling as well.

By the way, my state is Washington. Thanks

Master’s Psychology Student needs counseling/clinical internship experience. Can anyone help?

Does anyone know a good site or a good specific location to go for an entry level counseling/clinical internship? Most internships are for doctoral students, but I am enrolled in a master’s program in experimental psychology which is basically learning research methods and I don’t know of any internships I can take through this program, nor do I know any counseling/clinical internships that are looking for students from this program. Added to this problem is my current full-time 9-5 job which isn’t at all related to my desired field.

I don’t have a problem with doing unpaid volunteer work, but it must be part-time because of my full-time job. I plan to apply for a psy d. and I currently have no clinical or counseling experience in the field! I badly need this for my resume, so I would appreciate any suggestions you can give.

Masters of Science in Counseling? Or a Masters of Science in Psychology?

I want to pursue a career as a psychologist. I have received my bachelors; however am having difficulty in determining what kind of masters to get as the two schools I am applying to, offer different programs.

If I want to pursue a doctorate in psychology, can I have a masters in counseling? Or does it look better to have a general masters in psychology? Could I have either and still have the same chance of getting into doctoral school?

Psych Masters vs Doctoral … which to be in counseling?

Random, but if I wanted to be in counseling psychology (to have a private practice, psychotherapy, or rehabilitation MAYBE)… then what would the schooling be AFTER the undergraduate program?
Masters, then Doctoral?
Just Masters? Just Doctoral?
I’m so confused, please help
sorry I wasn’t clear. I REALLY don’t want to be a social worker, researcher, or school/educational psychologist! Thanks

Is it worth it to get a Phd in Counseling Psychology nowadays? Are you a licensed psychologist?

I am interested in entering the field of Counseling Psychology and go for the Phd so I can have the options of becoming a professor, a licensed psychologist, work at a university, etc. But I am wondering if the demand for psychologists are non existent and if I will spend 7 years on a doctoral program for nothing. Are there any psychologists who regret going this route or is this still it viable academic route to take?

I am debating going that route or doing higher ed administration. I have noticed there are fully funded 2-year programs that allow you to have assistantships (work for the university) while you learn. Especially since I feel I am not so much into therapy but more into academic advising, mentoring, achievement motivation, conflict resolution, student development etc.

Any advice?
I graduated with my bachelors degree in psychology in 2009.

How do I ‘transition’ from a PhD in research psychology to mental health counseling?

I have a PhD in developmental psychology, and since receiving the degree five years ago, I have led a successful research-oriented career. I am now a tenured professor, still doing research, but becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the ‘role’ that I am expected to play as a teacher and researcher. Although I have no training in mental health or counseling, I am seriously considering transitioning to a more applied career. The problem is that I have no idea how to make this transition, and do not know anyone who has done something similar to this. Would I be required to go through another doctoral programme, this time in clinical psychology? Or are there other ways for me to make the change, perhaps one that wouldn’t require another 5 years of graduate school, given that I already have my PhD is psychology?

Maters Degree In Mental Health Counseling?

I am just curious about something that i found out about today. I am interested in becoming a clinical or counseling psychologist (i would probably earn a PsyD at a professional school), and i know one possible route to take is to get a masters in mental health counseling. I want to earn a masters first, then jump to a doctoral program, that is why i am interested in MHC.

I found out that a university that is about 15 minutes away from my house has a mental health counseling program, however, it is not CACREP accredited (the university itself is accredited by the department of education though).

Would earning a non-CACREP accredited MHC degree do nothing to help get into a psychology doctoral program or could it actually be a viable route?

And don’t worry about saying that is a bad idea, since i have a ton of viable options, i am just curious about this one since the university is so close to where i currently live.

What are the GPA requirements for psychology graduate schools (Master’s degree) for clinical and counseling?

I’m looking for the average GPA requirements needed in order to be accepted into graduate programs for Master’s Degrees in clinical and counseling psychology.

It’s not as important, but knowing the GPA requirements for acceptance into doctoral degree programs for clinical and counseling psychology would both be great too.

Thanks.
