What are possible careers choices with my interests?
I am a confused sophomore majoring in psychology. My original plan was to continue on into a masters program and eventually a doctoral program in clinical psychology. The ultimate goal would be to have my own practice. However, being realistic I know that the clinical field is very competitive. I was wondering if there was another path I could follow..
Right now I volunteer at a women’s shelter (it is for survivors of domestic abuse only). I also volunteer at the courthouse where the shelter has an office that deals with PFA’s. I love every minute of it. I get to do empowerment counseling with the women. Is there anything I can specialize in that would allow me to get paid for doing this? Is there a job title for working with women especially in the psychology field? Also, I would love to publish my work and research on this issue. Any tips? I’d also appreciate suggestions on different grad schools and any tips getting in.
Thank you for your time and help!

Well, it’s hard to pick a carrer, especially since you seem still young. I think though it’s always good to make some free, extra cash. I highly recommend since you seem to be in a same situation a lot of people I know are in.

It’s very easy and costs nothing to join. I think you should check it out while you’re thinking/picking your job. Good luck!
Consider getting a BSW or MSW (bachelor’s or master’s in social work). Social workers often do counseling, though their focus is more on helping people cope with life problems rather than mental illnesses. There’s a good deal of overlap between social work and psychology clinical practices. For example, both might help with addictions or overcoming trauma or grief.
You could still have a private practice. Or you could work as part of a social services organization such as Jewish Family Services, Catholic Social Services or community-based agencies. Or you could work in the social work department of a hospital, or in a shelter as you’re doing now.
There are many, many grad schools with programs in psychology and in social work. Decide on what aspects of the field you want to focus on and pick a school or program with courses and research projects in that area. For example, domestic abuse might be the area you choose, or more generally, women’s problems.
Your advisor and some of your professors can help more regarding telling you about different specialties and careers, so meet with them and ask.
